Future Simple Active

Future Simple Active используется для сообщения о действиях и ситуациях, относящихся к будущему, решение о выполнении которых говорящий принимает в момент речи (не планируются заранее):

I've got a sore throat; Have you seen an ENT-specialist? - Not yet. Thank you for your advice; I will see him one of these days.

Future Simple Active применяется также для выражения предложений, просьб, согласия, обещания или отказа выполнить какие-либо действия: This case looks difficult for you. I will help you. Will you help me with this patient? I hope you won't forget to read this article.

Данное время может использоваться в высказываниях, представляющих собой предсказание будущих событий: Medicine will be very different in a hundred years' time. Neurology won't be the same in the next two decades.

Формальными показателями времени Future Simple Active выступает вспомогательный глагол will (реже shall): Nanotechnologies will become wide-spread in the future.

Отрицательное значение выражается путем добавления частицы not к вспомогательному глаголу: I'm sure they will not/won't use this method as it is very unreliable.

Вопросительные предложения конструируются путем постановки вспомогательного глагола в позицию перед подлежащим: Will this method reduce the morbidity rate? Shall we go to the symposium next week? When will the new patient arrive?

Лексическими маркерами времени Future Simple Active являются: tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, next week/month/year, etc.

Task 1. Read the sentences paying attention to the pronunciation of the endings of the verb.

Examples:

A: /s/, for example treats

D: /z/, for example heals

C: /iz/, for example changes

1. This drug relaxes the muscles and relieves pain. 2. This drug helps to alleviate the symptoms and reduces the risk of re-infection. 3. A person whose resistance is low catches disease more easily. 4. When someone panics his heart beats more rapidly and his temperature rises. 5. The laboratory analyses the blood samples and then the doctor examines the results and diagnoses the condition. 6. He then recommends a course of treatment and prescribes any necessary drugs. 7. The patient breathes with difficulty and coughs and sneezes constantly.8. The gland releases hormones into the blood stream causing an immediate reaction. 9. The patient now sleeps well and wakes feeling refreshed. 10. She suffers constant pain and controls it by using morphine. 11. This treatment counteracts the effect of the infection. 12. It is a procedure which cures the condition or kills the patient. 13. If the surgeon operates now the chance of success increases to about 50% 14. The sinoatrial node regulates the heart beat.

Task 2. Read the sentences paying attention to the pronunciation of the endings of the verb.

A: /t/, for example placed

B: /d/, for example examined

C: /id/, for example injected

1. The patient presented with acute abdominal pain. 2. The doctor diagnosed him as having hepatitis B. 3. Her condition improved, so we reduced the dose. 4. He consulted a specialist, who recommended surgery. 5. The patient coughed and sneezed all through the consultation. 6. The surgeons replaced the diseased hip with a metal one.7. The doctor prescribed a course of antibiotics. 8. The doctor’s speedy action prevented further complications. 9. The pharmacist mixed the chemicals in this bottle. 10. The surgeons operated immediately on the injured child. 11. The nurse disinfected and dressed the wound. 12. His pulse rate increased by 10%. 13. Nobody noticed that the patient’s blood pressure had dropped. 14. The surgeon probed the wound with a scalpel.

Task 3. Make the following sentences negative and interrogative.

1. The book provides basic information about obstetrics and gynecology. 2. The book included only the basic information needed and no more. 3. Each chapter ends with a series of case studies. 4. At the end of the book there was a separate section with questions. 5. The authors had expertise and interest in medical education. 6. The other author is a professional educator and anatomist with extensive experience. 7. Obstetrician-gynecologists also serve as the primary care physician. 8. The organism will create antibodies to kill bacteria. 9. This procedure will cure the patient. 10. This drug will help to regulate blood pressure. 11. This medicine always causes multiple side effects. 12. The ambulance arrived too late as the patient was dead. 13. The nurse heated the solution to 25°. 14. The orthopedist replaced the hip joint with an artificial one. 15. They managed to alleviate the symptoms. 16. This disease causes severe spasms in the pharynx. 17. They will test the new drug next month. 18. Bell’s palsy causes facial paralysis.

Task 4. Change the sentences into the Past Simple and Future Simple. Change the adverbial context.

1. There is no known method to prevent endometriosis. 2. At our annual conference we address the important causes of morbidity and mortality in each age group of patients. 2. The chief complaint is the reason for the patient's visit. 3. He requires some surgery to the prostate. 3. The nurse washes the area with a bit of antiseptic. 4. The patient takes up the correct position. 5. We meet with such cases every day. 6. Blood clots occur in embolism and thrombosis. 7. Blind people develop an acute sense of touch. 8. Doctors prescribe antibiotics in case of severe infections. 9. If a person is agitated, their pulse rate accelerates. 10. A diet high in saturated fats increases the risk of heart disease. 11. In this clinic we use only disposable needles. 12. The drug begins acting after a very short time. 13. She starts crying every time she cuts her finger. 14. The clinic has a staff of 200 people. 15. They use special devices to sterilize surgical instruments.

Task 5. Put questions to the words in italics.

1. Basic medical school textbooks often contain large amounts of information. 2. We wish to make a special acknowledgement of the work of Dr Mitcham. 3. The physician made the differential and presumptive diagnoses. 4. Gynecologists will continue to address issues such as hormone replacement therapy. 5. Other health problems came directly from the stated chief complaint. 6. Specific information about each item was included. 7. Any breast discharge will require evaluation. 9. The test confirmed the malignancy of the growth. 10. Dehydration causes as many as 60-70% of diarrhoeal deaths. 11. She will give birth to twins next month. 12. He went to see an ENT-specialist about his deafness. 13. We will equip the operating theatre with the latest scanning devices. 14. The doctor set the patient’s broken arm. 15. The doctor put her to sleep with a powerful narcotic.
