Past continuous active

We use the Past Continuous:

  • To describe an action, lasting for some time or serving as the background to other events in the past.

It was raining.

The children were playing rugby, when I saw them.

We don’t use the Present Continuous:

  • with the following verbs :like, love, hate, want, need, prefer, know, realize, suppose, mean, understand, believe, remember, belong, contain, consist, depend, seem.

I needed this photograph. (NOT I was needing this photograph).

  1. Declarative sentence

 + was/were +VingI/ he/ she/ it was writing.

You/ we/ they were writing.

  1. Interrogative sentence

Was/were ++Ving

Was I/ he/ she/ it writing?

Were you/ we/ they writing?

  1. Negative sentence

 + was/were +not+Ving

I/ he/ she/ it was not writing.

You/ we/ they were not writing.

Exercise 27. What were you doing in the following times? Write one sentence. Use the Past Continuous.

  2. (at 5 o’clock last Monday)

  3. (at 10.15 yesterday morning)

  4. (at 4.30 this morning)

Exercise 29. Put the verb into the correct form, Past Continuous or Past Simple.

I (meet) Tom and Jane at the airport a few weeks ago. They …………. (go) to Paris and I (go) to Rome. We (have) a chat while we …………. (wait) for our flights.

Future continuous active

We use the Future Continuous:

  • To describe an action, that will last for some period of time in the future.

Don’t phone between 7 and 8, I’ll be having dinner.

This time next week I’ll be lying on the beach.

We don’t use the Future Continuous:

  • with the following verbs :like, love, hate, want, need, prefer, know, realize, suppose, mean, understand, believe, remember, belong, contain, consist, depend, seem.

I need this photograph. (NOT I will be needing this photograph).

  1. Declarative sentence

 + will be +Ving

I/ he/ she/ it/ you/ we/ they will be writing.

  1. Interrogative sentence

Will++be +Ving ?

Will I/ he/ she/ it/ you/ we/ they be writing?

  1. Negative sentence

 + will +not+be +Ving
