I can translate conversational clichés!

Part VII. Translation

Exercise 16: Translate the text. Find in the text the clichés and state the method of translation: to find a Russian equivalent or paraphrase.

CANADA

Canada is the second largest country (Russia is the largest). But it has fewer people than many other countries that are much smaller. This is because much of Canada is a very cold place with long winters. In the northern islands it is often cold even in summer. Stephen Leacock, a famous Canadian humorist once wrote that life in Canada consisted of preparing for winter, enduring winter and recovering from winter.

C anada is surrounded by three oceans – the Pacific, the Atlantic and the Arctic. It has the longest coastline in the world: 243, 000 kilometres. No wonder the country’s motto is “from sea to sea”. The latest big craze in Canada is whale-watching. Special boats go out into the ocean – at the right place and at the right time – and you have 99% chance of seeing whales.

Nearly one-fourth of all the fresh water in the world is in Canada. Canada has more lakes than any other country. Many of the lakes were created by the glaciers. There are lots of rivers in Canada too.

Canada is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Much of the country’s wealth lies in its many miles and forests. Minerals such as coal, copper, nickel and iron ore are found in the mines. Forests cover almost half of Canada’s territory.

There are 42 national parks in Canada. They were created to protect forests, animals and plants. The oldest national park is Baffs in Alberta. It was created in 1885 in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

There are more polar bears in Canada than in any other country in the world. Sometimes they even come to villages and towns in search of food.

Canada’s official languages are English and French. But many other languages are spoken there too, including Inuktitut, (the language of the Inuit or Eskimos) and other Canadian Indian languages.

About 77% of Canadians live in cities and towns. Toronto is the largest city in Canada. Toronto is the country’s business centre and home to the largest companies and banks.

Ottawa, the capital of Canada, is one of the country’s most attractive cities. It’s the public face of Canada for many people so the city has been kept lovely and welcoming. It has many parks, museums, art galleries and universities.

Canada is a wonderful place to visit – the country is waiting for you!

Exercise 17: Now when you know that each cliché has its own story study the following conversational clichés and prepare a short report on the history of any cliché you like:

Love: "Love is blind". "All's fair in love and war."Unlucky in cards, lucky in love". "Misery loves company"."You only hurt the one you love".

Medicine: "Laughter is the best medicine"."A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down".

Luck: "Don't push your luck". "If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all".

Friends: "Diamonds are a girl's best friends". "We are known by the company we keep". "A friend in need is a friend indeed".

Animals: "Curiosity killed the cat". "Why close the barn door after the horse is gone?"

Beauty: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". "Beauty is only skin-deep"

Fruits: "One bad apple spoils the barrel". "An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. “If you eat well, you will never fall sick!”

Being Free: "There's no such thing as a free lunch". "Foot lose and fancy free”. "Free as a bird”. "If you love something set it free".

"and that's the way" clichés: "... and that's the way lady luck dances”; "... and that's the way the cookie crumbles";"... and that's the way the dice rolls"; "... and that's the way the ball bounces".
