The fire investigator’s duties

Fire investigators must discover, collect, sort, analyze and report the information gathered. Usually they identify the reasons for ignition and the stages leading to the ignition. Fire investigators pay special attention to the fire spread mechanism once ignition has occurred. The interaction between the fire spread mechanism, the building design and the occupants is very important for fire investigation. The fire investigators must qualify the fire size, occupants’ egress and firefighting efficiency.

The fire investigator must observe the conditions of the fire scene: the colour of the smoke, damaged or disconnected fire alarm systems, inoperative fire hydrants, blocked streets, and other access ways, odours, difficulty in extinguishing. It is necessary to pay special attention to the unusual burning. It includes rate of fire spread, intensity of fire, peculiar flame, flash fires or explosions. Investigating the scene of fire the investigator takes into consideration some incendiary devices such as candles, wicks (гніт), some mechanical devices. They may help to determine the cause of fire. It is necessary to examine building entrances. They may be blocked with furniture or other large heavy items arranged in such a way to impede the work of the firefighter.

The fire investigator must be very observant. He must answer the following questions: Have you seen a familiar face at the fire? Perhaps there is a person you have noticed at other fires. Or there is a very active helper who seems to know too much about this fire or other fires.

Sometimes the behaviour of people will give an indication that something is wrong. An occupant may try to conceal the evidences which blame him or another member of the family. That is why it is important to prevent the entry of persons into the building. It preserves their lives and evidences of the fire and prevents them from disturbing room arrangements (порушення місцерозташування предметів у кімнаті).
