Fire protection equipment (fpe)

Effective firefighting depends on qualified and experienced firefighting personnel and is provided by the following means:

• Fire protection equipment. It includes various types of fire engines, fire extinguishing installations and fire technical equipment.

• Industrial machines re-equipped and adapted for firefighting purposes.

• Fire extinguishing substances. They are as follows: water, foam, powders and gases.

• Means of communication and lighting.

• Various kinds of transport.

Fire engines are divided into main, special and support vehicles according to their destination.

Main fire engines are designed for fighting fires in cities and villages or at various industrial enterprises. They include fire extinguishing tankers, fire extinguishing hose trucks, fire extinguishing powder engines, airfield fire extinguishing engines and fast response vehicles. Fire extinguishing tankers deliver firefighting crew and firefighting facilities to the fire scene. These engines can smother fires with water or air-mechanical foam. They can be light (with water capacity (водомісткістю) up to 2000 litres), medium-level (with water capacity from 2000 to 4000 litres), and heavy (with water capacity from 4000 litres and more). Fast response vehicles deliver firefighting personnel and fire extinguishing substances to the place of fire as quickly as possible.

Special fire engines do peculiar tasks at the site of fire. They are as follows: aerial ladders, aerial lifting platforms, fire pumping stations of gas, gas-water, powder and air-foam extinguishing, fire extinguishing trailers, unified engine heaters, vehicles of gas protective service, firefighting planes, helicopters, trains, tanks and ships. Auto-pump fire extinguishing stations deliver water where water pipe lines (трубопроводи) are absent. Fire extinguishing trucks with ladder mast extinguish fires with powder, water or air-mechanical foam through the roof monitor or foam generator. Forest fire extinguishing trucks transport the firefighting crew, equipment and firefighting liquids to the place of fire. Unified powder monitor unit (установка порошкового пожежегасіння) puts out fires of A, B, C classes and electrical installations. Headquarters operative vehicles deliver the group of officers to the fire scene. They organize the firefighting headquarters which controls firefighting facilities.

Support vehicles include vehicles of gas protective service which deliver additional balloons on the pressed air, fire smoke exhausters, devices equipped with special sound and light signals and water protection techniques. Support vehicles provide refueling and maintenance of various types of fire protection equipment.

Fire engines have certain specifications. They identify the type of base chassis and engine, fire fighting equipment, supply of fire extinguishing substances and the number of firefighting crew. Let’s deal with specifications of Fire-Extinguishing Tanker FET – 40 (131) model 137 А. Base chassis is ZIL 131. It is equipped with carburetor engine. It has 150 horsepowers. Its maximum speed with full load is 80 km per hour. There is a driver and 6 firemen in the cab. Supply of fire extinguishing matters consists of water minimum 2,730 cubic metres and foaming agent minimum 1,70 cubic metres. The length of the fire hoses is 408 metres. The roof monitor is PLS-P 20. The water throw range of the roof monitor is 50 metres and the foam throw range is 30 metres. The pump capacity is 40 horsepowers. The pump head is 100 metres. This fire extinguishing tanker has 6 hand monitors. The overall dimensions are as follows: the length is 7640 mm, the width is 2500 mm and the height is 2950 mm. The mass of the engine with full load is 11100 kg.
