1. Transfer the sentences into the second and third conditionals.

E.g. If you help me I’ll do it.

- If you helped me I would do if.

- If you had helped me I would have done it.

    1. Even if they hold Ronald as suspect he’ll be able to stand up to them.

    2. If the judge declares a mistrial, what will happen then?

    3. If the judge dismisses the charge of contempt of court Mr Bennet will be set free right away.

    4. If you use inside information you’ll be charged with fraud.

    5. If you stand by each other nobody will be able to intimidate you.

    6. If you jump at the offer without considering all the pros and cons you will regret it later.

    7. If your partners don’t disclose this information there will be nothing to charge you with.

    8. If Mr Seagull comes to terms with his creditors he won’t be prosecuted.

    9. If they conspire and present fake evidence they themselves will be put in the dock.

    10. If the solicitor is able to find a loophole in the law Mr Benson will be acquitted.

    11. If the accused confesses to the crime the prosecution won’t seek a harsh sentence.

    12. If the defence doesn’t produce solid evidence the verdict of the jurors will certainly be “guilty”.

    13. Even if police put pressure on Stinson he won’t confess to any crime.

    14. If the court doesn’t establish the guilt of the accused beyond any reasonable doubt no judge will impose the death penalty.

    15. If you can prove the evidence is fake we’ll put everything to rights.

2. Analyze the following examples and make up short situations in which they could be used.

E.g. If I came into a fortune, I would give up working.

  • I hate my job. However, I can’t give it up since I have to earn my own living. But If I came into a fortune, I would give up working.

  1. If you gave him a little encouragement, he would work really hard.

  2. If the police held Mr Robinson as suspect, they would keep him in prison.

  3. If Roy’s fortune were at stake, he would be fighting tooth and nail for it.

  4. If Mr Simons hadn’t used inside information, he wouldn’t have been charged with fraud.

  5. If you had supported James he would have been able to stand his ground.

  6. If Michael were an honest person, he would have disclosed that information.

  7. If you had come to terms with your competitors, you wouldn’t be under attack now.

  8. If you had toed the line, you wouldn’t have been given the sack and wouldn’t be looking for a job now.

3. Analyze the following examples and translate them into Russian.

  1. If you should bring this information to light, your future will be at stake.

  2. If your partners should jump at the offer, you’ll have to stand by them.

  3. If they were to start criminal prosecution against our company now, we would be in real trouble.

  4. If the court were to find Stewart guilty of fraud, nobody would be able to help him out.

  5. But for the fake evidence Jack tried to present, he would have been acquitted.

  6. If it hadn’t been for Max, we would have put everything to rights long ago.

  7. But for the experienced defence counsel, the crook would be in prison now.

  8. Were you able to put two and two together, you would know who is to blame.

  9. Had the governor tried to put pressure on the judge, his reputation would have been ruined.

  10. Had the sides come to terms, there would be no trial now.

  11. Should the jurors find Stinson guilty of murder, it will mean the death penalty.

  12. Should they fail to prove it is a miscarriage of justice, an innocent man will be put to death.
