1. to link, to connect, to associate

to link – соединять, связывать

E.g. These events are subtly linked together.

to connect – соединять, связывать

E.g. There was not enough evidence to prove that he was connected with the murder.

NB. “Link” предполагает более тесную связь, чем “connect”.

E.g. The crimes are linked (= closely connected).

to associate – связывать, ассоциировать

E.g. The doctor is often associated in the child’s mind with injections.

2. Impact, effect, influence

impact – влияние, воздействие, последствия

E.g. This would have a significant impact on our relations.

influence – влияние, воздействие

E.g. She has a certain influence on her husband.

effect – воздействие, действие

E.g. The medicine took effect.

3. scarce, rare

scarce – редкий, недостаточный, скудный

E.g. There is famine in this part of the country, and food is scarce.

rare – редкий, редко встречающийся, исключительный

E.g. She is a rare beauty.

4. to adjust, to adapt

to adjust – приспособиться, привыкать, адаптироваться (с волевым усилием)

E.g. Soon his eyes adjusted to the dark. – Скоро его глаза привыкли к темноте. (Он хотел как можно скорее сориентироваться в темноте).

to adapt – приспосабливаться, адаптироваться

E.g. Gradually the eye adapts itself to darkness. – Постепенно глаз привыкает к темноте. (Речь идет о природном свойстве глаза.)

5. to require, to demand

to require – требовать, нуждаться в чем-либо

E.g. The situation requires calmness.

to demand – требовать, предъявлять требование

E.g. He demanded an apology.

6. to emerge, to appear

to appear – появляться, показываться; казаться

E.g. A ship appeared on the horizon. – На горизонте появился корабль.

The work appears to be interesting. – Работа кажется интересной.

to emerge – показываться, постепенно вырисовываться; выясняться

E.g. A ship emerged on the horizon. – На горизонте появился корабль (постепенно вырисовался).

7. a cause, a reason

a cause – причина (внешняя), основание, повод

E.g. There is no cause for anxiety.

a reason – причина, (субъективное) основание, мотив

E.g. She had a reason for laughing.

8. restriction, limitation

restriction – ограничение, отсутствие свободы действий

E.g. to impose restrictions on smth – вводить ограничения на что-либо (запрет действий)

limitation – ограничение, ограниченность

E.g. There is no limitation on exports. – На экспорт ограничений нет (по количеству).
