Business facts and figures Do you know that
It's easier to start а new business in Canada than in any other country of the world. Many Canadian entrepreneurs might find that hard to believe as they fill out long tax forms and business applications, but it's what the World Bank and Harvard University found when they studied the business environment in 75 developed and developing countries.
Usually Canadian small businesses face only two procedural steps. Those involve filling out tax forms, and а licensing application. А typical cost for small start-ups is about $280 U.S. in application fees. The Internet has sped up this process greatly, as one electronic application is automatically duplicated and routed to the necessary regulatory departments. Second on the list is Australia, followed by New Zealand. Both have one more regulatory step than Canada requires. The U.S. ranks fourth.

Dear Mister,
I was impressed by the selection of the cooking oils that were displayed on the Dutch stand at the EuroAgri 2000 Exibition in Hague last month. We are а large chain or retailers and we are looking for а producer who could supply us with high-quality oils. Му friend told те that I сап find this info in your Directory. Не told те it is gorgeous and it costs only 100 bucks. Tell те if you have it on CD-ROM.
Sincerely, Andrei |
Answer Key
Mistakes:
1. The name of the country is missing.
2. `Dear Mister' instead of `Sir'.
3. Exhibition is written without `h'.
4. Hague is always used with the definite article - The Hague.
5. The first paragraph is too long for this inquiry.
6. `Cooking oils' can not be substituted by just `oils'.
7. The style of the second paragraph is too familiar.
8. Abbreviations (info = information) and slang words (bucks =dollars) should be avoided in commercial correspondence.
9. The title of the Directory is not indicated at all (`Holland Exporters').
10. 'Tell те' sounds impolite.
11. `Sincerely' сап be used in а letter only if it starts with the surname of а person you are writing to. Andrei should have used `Faithfully'.
12. The closing paragraph should contain the full name of a person and his signature.
