VI. B. Read the text Greenwich and then discuss it
In the 18tft century Greenwich was only a riverside village near London. Today it is part of London and you can get there by the river Thames, on special regular cruises from Westminster, Charing Cross, and Tower Piers. Greenwich has the oldest London park - Royal Park, as well as being home to magnificent buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren.
One of the most important places in Greenwich is the National Maritime Museum. Its exhibitions explain how and why Britain became a leading sea power, and present the two main figures in its history: Lord Nelson and Captain James Cook. Video presentations of modern ships and huge paintings presenting historic battles all help you trace the development of Britain's sea history.
VI. C. Read the text Alaska and then discuss it (from Easy English № 14)
Alaska is the 49th state of America and one of the most interesting places in the world. Not everybody is able to visit it, so join us in our journey to this great land.
Alaska is a huge area placed partially within the Subarctic Zone, in the north western corner of Noth America. Its coastline is rugged by plenty of fjords, cliffs, peninsulas and islands. It is home to the highest mountain of North America, McKinley, which is 6193m high. The capital of Alaska is Juneau and its biggest cities are Anchorage, Sitka and Kodiak.
Sightseeing and photography of wildlife are favourite visitor’s attractions. Fishing and dogsleds are also available for tourists. You cannot miss the National Parks of Alaska rich in moose, reindeer, grizzly bears, sea lions, seals and swans. The flower symbol of Alaska, the forget-me-not, speaks for itself – you will never forget this charming land.
