“This isn’t a war,” said the artilleryman. “It never was a war, any more than there’s war between man and ants.”
Suddenly I recalled the night in the observatory.
“After the tenth shot they fired no more (после десятого выстрела они больше не стреляли) — at least, until the first cylinder came (по крайней мере, пока не прибыл первый цилиндр).”
“How do you know?” said the artilleryman I explained (я объяснил). He thought (он задумался). “Something wrong with the gun (что-то не так с пушкой),” he said. “But what if there is (ну и что, если так)? They’ll get it right again (они ее починят снова). And even if there’s a delay (и если даже будет /небольшая/ отсрочка), how can it alter the end (как она может изменить итог)? It’s just men and ants (это просто /как/ люди и муравьи). There’s the ants build their cities (муравьи строят свои города), live their lives, have wars, revolutions (живут своей жизнью, воюют, делают революции), until the men want them out of the way (пока люди не захотят, чтобы они убрались с пути), and then they go out of the way (и они убираются с пути). That’s what we are now — just ants (вот кто мы сейчас — просто муравьи). Only (вот только) —— ”
“Yes,” I said (да, — сказал я).
“We’re eatable ants (мы съедобные муравьи).”
We sat looking at each other
“And what will they do with us (и что же они сделают с нами)?” I said.
wrong [rON], delay [dI'leI], ant [xnt]

We sat looking at each other.
“And what will they do with us?” I said.
“That’s what I’ve been thinking (это /как раз/ то, о чем я давно думаю),” he said; “that’s what I’ve been thinking. After Weybridge I went south — thinking (после Уэйбриджа я пошел на юг /и все/ думал). I saw what was up (я видел, что происходило). Most of the people were hard at it squealing and exciting themselves (большинство людей во всю скулили и волновались; hard at it — заниматься чем-либо во всю, упорно /разг./; to squeal — визжать, пронзительно кричать; жаловаться, протестовать). But I’m not so fond of squealing (но я не люблю скулить; to be fond of — любить; fond — нежный, любящий). I’ve been in sight of death once or twice (я несколько раз: «однажды или дважды» смотрел смерти в глаза); I’m not an ornamental soldier (я не игрушечный солдатик; ornamental — декоративный), and at the best and worst, death — it’s just death (но в лучшем или в худшем /случае/ = так или иначе, смерть — это просто смерть). And it’s the man that keeps on thinking comes through (и выживает только тот человек, который не теряет голову: «продолжает думать»; to come through — проникать, просачиваться; пережить /что-л. неприятное/, пройти через /что-л./). I saw everyone tracking away south (я видел, что все идут на юг; to track — прокладывать путь; ходить, бродить). Says I, “Food won’t last this way” (я говорю /себе/: “еды там всем не хватит”; to last — продолжаться, длиться; хватать, быть достаточным), and I turned right back (и я сразу повернул назад). I went for the Martians like a sparrow goes for man (я шел по следам марсиан, как воробей за человеком; to go for — идти за /чем-л./). All round” — he waved a hand to the horizon (/а там/ повсюду, — он махнул рукой в сторону горизонта) — “they’re starving in heaps, bolting, treading on each other (они толпами мрут от голода, мечутся, топча друг друга; to bolt — быстро двигаться; нестись стрелой, убегать; to tread — ступать, шагать; топтать)....”
He saw my face, and halted awkwardly (он увидел /выражение/ моего лица и неловко замялся; to halt — останавливаться; делать привал; колебаться; запинаться).
squeal [skwi:l], sparrow ['spxrqu], awkwardly ['O:kwqdlI]

He saw my face, and halted awkwardly.
“No doubt lots who had money have gone away to France (конечно, многие, у кого были деньги, уплыли во Францию),” he said. He seemed to hesitate whether to apologise (казалось он раздумывал: «колебался», извиниться ли), met my eyes, and went on (но, встретив мой взгляд, продолжал): “There’s food all about here (здесь повсюду /полно/ еды). Canned things in shops (/различные/ консервы в магазинах); wines, spirits, mineral waters (вино, спиртное, минеральная вода; spirits — алкоголь, спиртной напиток); and the water mains and drains are empty (а водопроводные магистрали и трубы пусты). Well, I was telling you what I was thinking (вот, я рассказал вам, о чем я думал). “Here’s intelligent things,” I said (это разумные существа, — сказал я себе), “and it seems they want us for food (и, похоже, мы им нужны как пища). First, they’ll smash us up (сперва они разгромят нас) — ships, machines, guns, cities, all the order and organization (/уничтожат/ корабли, машины, пушки, города, весь порядок и организацию). All that will go (все это исчезнет; to go /зд./ — гибнуть; пропадать, исчезать). If we were the size of ants we might pull through (будь мы размером с муравьев, мы могли бы выжить; to pull through — спастись, выжить /разг./). But we’re not (но мы не такие). It’s all too bulky to stop (это все слишком велико, чтобы его остановить = нашу цивилизацию не остановишь так просто; bulky — большой, объемистый). That’s the first certainty.” Eh (это-то совершенно ясно: «это первая определенность», /не так ли/; first — первый; главный, наиважнейший; certainty — несомненный факт; уверенность)?”
