§ 1 The present perfect continuous

1. F o r m a t i o n

The Present Perfect Continuous is formed with the auxiliary to be in the Present Perfect + the Present Participle: I have been working for two hour already.

The negative is formed by adding not to the auxiliary to be in the Present Perfect + the Present Participle.

The interrogative is formed by inverting the auxiliary to be in the Present Perfect and the subject + the Present Participle.

(= I've been working)

The Present Perfect Continuous is used to indicate an action which has begun before the present moment of speech and has continued up to this moment.

The Present Perfect Continuous is used to denote:

  1. an action which began in the past and is still going on at the moment of speaking: I have been waiting for an hour and he hasn't turned up yet.

  2. an action which began in the past and has recently stopped or just stopped: You are out of breath. Have you been running? Ann's hands are dirty. She has been watering the flowers.

The following time expressions can be used with the Present Perfect Continuous: how long, for and since: They have been waiting here for an hour. I have been watching TV since 2 o'clock. How long have you been learning English?
