§ 2 The past perfect continuous

1. F o r m a t i o n

The Past Perfect Continuous is formed with the auxiliary to be in the Past Perfect + the Present Participle. It is therefore the same for all persons: I had been working for two hours when my friends came to see us.

The negative is formed by adding not to the auxiliary to be in the Past Perfect + the Present Participle.

The interrogative is formed by inverting the auxiliary to be in the Past Perfect and the subject + the Present Participle.

The Past Perfect Continuous is used to indicate an action which began before a definite moment of the past time and continued up to that past moment.

The Past Perfect Continuous is used to denote:

  1. an action which began in the past and continued for a period of time up to another action in the past: When I came home, my mother had been cooking dinner for more than two hours.

  2. an action which began in the past and was completed before another past action, but the effect was still apparent: When the boys came into the house, one had a black eye. They had been fighting.

The following time expressions can be used with the Past Perfect Continuous for, since: I had been translating the article for an hour since morning before you came.

  9. When the test was over, the students found out that they had been writing it for 2 hours.

  10. Mark tried to stop his friend who had been talking for the last 10 minutes.
