The Preposition

Предлогами называются служебные слова, которые выражают отношения слов в предложении. Поскольку падежные отношения в современном английском языке почти полностью отсутствуют, предлоги играют исключительно важную роль, являясь одним из основных способов выражения падежных отношений между существительным/местоимением и другими словами.

Как известно из раздела «Имя существительное», отношения родительного падежа выражаются с помощью предлога of. Предлог to соответствует русскому дательному падежу, предлоги by и with – творительному, в данном случае они теряют свое лексическое значение, выполняют чисто грамматическую функцию и на русский язык отдельными словами не переводятся.

The expression of her face changed.	Выражение ее лица изменилось.
The teacher explained a new grammar rule to the students.	Учитель объяснил студентам новое грамматическое правило.
The document was signed by the director.	Документ был подписан директором.
The letter was written with a pencil.	Письмо написано карандашом.

Большинство предлогов имеют самостоятельное лексическое значение: from – от, из, under – под, during – в течение, instead of – вместо и т. д.

Многие предлоги многозначны и их значение конкретизируется лишь в контексте.

He’s brought a letter for you.	Он принес письмо для тебя.
He’s been here for two weeks.	Он находится здесь в течение двух недель.
Did they pay you for the work?	Они заплатили вам за работу?
They went for a walk.	Они пошли на прогулку.

В английском языке имеется ряд глаголов, которые всегда употребляются с предлогом, который может отсутствовать в русском языке.

There is a man waiting for you.	Тебя ждет какой-то человек.
Answer my question, please.	Ответьте, пожалуйста, на мой вопрос.

По своей форме и морфологическому составу предлоги подразделяются на простые (of, for, on), сложные (below, between), составные (in front of, out of, by means of). Некоторые предлоги имеют форму причастий и наречий, от которых они произошли: regarding, respecting, before, after, etc.

Предлоги обычно ставятся перед существительными/местоимениями, к которым они относятся, однако в ряде случаев могут стоять после них, а также в конце предложения. Например:

There is a picture on the wall.	На стене картина.
What street do you live in?	На какой улице ты живешь?
This novel is much spoken about.	Об этом романе много говорят.

По своему лексическому значению предлоги подразделяются на предлоги места, направления, времени, цели, причины, образа действия и т. п.

Предлоги места

Предлоги причины

Предлоги с материалами и инструментами

Предлоги сравнения

Предлоги цели
for – для, за, на with – с			for this purpose, for a drive, for rest with the purpose, with this in mind

От перечисленных выше следует отличать случаи так называемого несвободного, фиксированного употребления предлогов: on duty – дежурный, ответственный, on foot – пешком, а также широкое употребление послелогов, т. е. предлогов, обязательных для ряда глаголов (to be interested in – интересоваться чем-либо, to be responsible for – отвечать за и т. д.). Такие слова следует запоминать.
