Употребление определенного артикля с именами собственными

Согласно общему правилу, имена собственные употребляются без артикля. Однако большое количество их употребляется также с определенным артиклем. Это:

1) географические названия:

а) стороны света, регионы и некоторые местности: the West, the East, the North, the South, the North Pole, the South Pole, the Arctic, the Middle East, the Mid-West, the Far East, the Crimea, the West-India, the Transvaal, the North of England, the South of France. НО: to travel north, from North to South.

б) названия стран, состоящие из нескольких слов: the United States of America (но: America), the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the British Empire (НО: Great Britain, England), the Russian Federation (но: Russia), the Republic of Belarus (НО: Belarus) и, как исключение, the Congo, the Netherlands, the Sudan, the Philippines, the Argentine (НО: Argentina).

в) названия водных бассейнов:

рек: the Thames, the Nile, the Volga, the Mississippi, etc.

озер, если они употребляются без слова lake: the Ontario, the Erie, the Baikal. НО: Lake Baikal, Lake Ontario, исключение: the Great Lakes.

морей: the Black Sea, the North Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Baltic Sea, etc.

океанов: the Pacific (Ocean), the Atlantic (Ocean), the Indian (Ocean), etc.

каналов, заливов и проливов: the English Channel, the Panama Canal, the Persian Gulf, the Suez Canal.

водопадов: the Niagara Falls, но: Kalambo Falls

г) названия горных хребтов и архипелагов: the Caucasus, the Alps, the Apennines, the Urals, the Rocky Mountains, the Himalayan Mountains, the Cordilleras. НО: названия горных вершин употребляются без артикля: Elbrus, Everest, Montblanc.

д) названия пустынь: the Sahara, the Karakum, the Gobi.

е) названия групп островов: the West Indies, the Azores, the Bahamas, the Bermudas, the British Isles. НО: названия отдельных островов употребляются без артикля: Madagascar, Sicily, Corfu.

ж) названия планет и созвездий: the Sun, the Earth, the Great Bear, the Milky Way. НО: Mars, Venus, Mercury.

2) объекты культуры:

а) названия английских и американских газет: the Times, the Guardian, the Washington Post, the Canadian Tribune, the Daily Worker (НО: Today, Pravda).

Примечание. названия журналов, как правило, употребляются без артиклей: Newsweek. НО: the Spectator.

б) названия учебных и научных заведений, за исключением тех из них, которые начинаются с имени собственного: the Academy of Sciences, the College of Medicine, the University of London, the University of Columbia. НО: London University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, Carnegie College, Manchester Grammar School, etc.

в) названия гостиниц и ресторанов: the Metropol, the Savoy, the Hilton, the Marriott, the Ritz, the Cage Royal, the Arbat, etc. НО: Smith’s Hotel.

г) названия известных архитектурных сооружений и памятников: the Tower of London, the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the White House, the Kremlin, the Arc of Triumph, the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Jefferson Memorial, the Acropolis, the Great Wall of China, the Berlin Wall; the Pulkovo Observatory, the London Underground, the Brookline Bridge (НО: London Bridge, Tower Bridge), etc.

д) названия музеев, театров, кинотеатров: the British Museum, the National Gallery, the Louvre, the Hermitage, the Tretiakov Gallery; the Bolshoy Theatre, the Mariinsky Theatre, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Pushkin Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera House, the Apollo, the Globe, the Odeon, etc.

е) названия оркестров, музыкальных групп, танцев: the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the polka, the waltz, etc. НО: Belly-Dance.

ж) названия спортивных событий: the Olympic Games, the World Cup, the Grand National, the Cup Final, etc. НО: Wimbledon, Henley, Ascot and Epson, etc.

з) названия кораблей, поездов: the Titanic, the Avrora, the Kursk, the Orient Express, etc.

3) исторические и политические реалии:

а) названия исторических событий и документов: the Great Patriotic War, the French Revolution, the Constitution, etc.

б) названия политических партий, объединений и органов власти: the Labour Party, the Conservative Party, the Liberals, the Trade Unions, the House of Commons, the House of Lords, the House of Representatives, the Senate, the State Department, the Cabinet, the Bundestag, the State Duma. НО: Congress.

в) названия международных организаций: the United Nations Organization (the UN), the European Union (the EU), etc.

Примечание. если употребляется аббревиатура, читаемая в одно слово, то артикль не употребляется: NATO, UNESCO, UNICEF, OPEC, etc.

г) полные названия крупных компаний и корпораций: the Coca-Cola Company (Coca-Cola), the IBM Corporation (IBM), the Bell Telephone Company, the BBC, the Panasonic company (Panasonic), the McDonald's company (McDonald's), General Motors, Shell, Sony, etc.

д) названия банков: the World Bank, the European Investment Bank, the Bank of England, the Belarus Bank. НО: Lloyd’s Bank, Bardley’s Bank.

4) титулы, звания, имена:

а) титулы, звания, за которыми следует предлог of: the Duke of York, the Mayor of Moscow, а также при обращении по титулу или званию (без имени): the Queen (НО: Queen Elisabeth II), the Captain (НО: Captain Cook), the Colonel (НО: Colonel Brave), the Prime Minister (НО: Prime Minister Tony Blair), the Prince of Wales (НО: Prince Charles), the President (НО: President Bush).

б) представители известных династий.

King Henry VIII – King Henry the Eighth

Peter I – Peter the First, etc.

в) фамилии (для обозначения всей семьи в целом): the Kennedys, the Forsytes, the Ivanovs, the Browns, etc.

Как правило, если имена собственные имеют определение, выраженное прилагательным, обозначающим постоянное качество, они употребляются с определенным артиклем: the silent Mr. Brown, the real Forsyte, etc.
