Степени сравнения прилагательных и наречий

1. positive – положительная (словарная):

союзы: as...as, not as...as, not so...as

It’s as cold as yesterday

It’s not as cold as yesterday

предложения со словами: twice – вдвое, three times – втрое, half – наполовину.

This book has 100 pages, that book has 50 pages. This book is twice as long as that. Today is twice as cold as yesterday.

2. comparative – сравнительная, сравниваются два и только два объекта:

than – чем

This book is longer and more interesting than that.

Прилагательные делятся на короткие и длинные:

а) 1-2 слога (1-2 syllables), обычно с окончанием -y:

Для образования сравнительной степени к короткому прилагательному добавляется окончание -er:

long → longer длинный → длиннее; cold → colder холодный → холоднее

удвоение: hot → hotter; thin → thinner

замена: happy → happier; merry → merrier

б) 3 слога и больше, обычно с суффиксами -ed, -ing, -ful, -less.

Для образования сравнительной степени в этом случае используется конструкция:

more (less) + прилагательное

more interesting – более интересный

more boring – более скучный

more useful – более полезный

конструкция чем..., тем...

the + II степень..., the + II степень...

The longer the days, the shorter the nights.

The more we know, the more we forget

3. superlative – превосходная степень,

короткие	long – the longest
	short – the shortest
	thin – the thinnest
	happy – the happiest
длинные	interesting – the most interesting (the least interesting)
	beautiful – the most beautiful (the least beautiful)

Исключения:

good (well)	better	the best
bad	worse	the worst
little	less	the least
much, many	more	the most
old	older	the oldest (о чужих)
	elder	the eldest (о родственниках)
far	farther	the farthest (далеко)
	further	the furthest (о событиях)

This street is farther – Эта улица дальше
