Вопросительная форма модальных глаголов
В вопросительной форме модальный глагол ставится перед подлежащим:
Can I help you? May I come in?
Have – с помощью вспомогательного глагола do:
Do you have to leave? – Вы должны уходить?
Did you have to work yesterday? – Вы должны были работать вчера?
Отрицание и модальные глаголы
He can not (can’t) speak Spanish. You don’t have to come. They didn’t have to do it.
mustn’t – опасное, плохое, ни в коем случае
Children mustn’t play on the road
needn’t to = don’t have to = don’t need to – не должен, нет необходимости
You don’t need to clean the room, I have just done it.
Сравнить: shouldn't have done – не нужно было, а сделано (с негативным смыслом)

Прошедшее завершенное время
Обозначает действие, которое произошло до другого прошедшего действия или до определенного момента в прошлом.
had + III form
He studied English after he had come to England – Он изучил английский после того, как приехал.
He had studied English by the time he went to England – Он сначала выучил английский, затем приехал.
Had he come by that time? – Он приехал к этому времени?
He hadn’t come by 6 o’clock – Он не приехал к 6 часам.
Показатели: by that time; after; before; as soon as...; hardly...when, no sooner...than – как только.
Hardly had he entered the room when he switched on his computer – Только он вошел в комнату, он включил компьютер.
