ASTANA
Astana is the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan – our Motherland. Akmola was pronounced as the capital on the 10th of December 1997 by the President and the Parliament. This was a historical decision motivated by the advantageous geographical and political location of the city, in the heart of the country and at the intersection of the country’s main routes. In 1998 the decision was made to change the name of the new capital Akmola to Astana, which translates from the Kazakh language as “capital”.
The history of Akmola starts in 1830 with the construction of the Akmola fortress in Karautkel to make it the main town of the country of the Siberian Kyrghyz on the Ishim river. In XIX century Akmola was a substantial commercial and economic center in the steppe.
Former names include Akmola, Akmolinsk, Tselinograd and Aqmola. Astana is the second largest city of Kazakhstan with an officially estimated population (1 Dec. 2007) of 600200. It is located in the north – central portion of Kazakhstan. Climatically Astana is the second coldest capital in the world (behind Ulan Bator), with temperatures of -35 to- 40 C common in the late autumn.
Astana has seen one of the world’s greatest building projects, a massive home for the president, a mosque, and numerous parks and monuments. The project was designed to not just make the city the centre of Kazakhstan, but of all Central Asia.
Astana is one of the biggest cultural centers in Kazakhstan. The Presidential Cultural Centre of the Republic of Kazakhstan has been established in the centre of the city. The structure of the Centre includes a museum with various rooms and displays representing the historical values of the past and the present of Kazakhstan. There is a library containing more than a million books and electronic catalogues in the centre. The Kazakh National Music Academy has also been established in Astana. In 2000 the National Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Kulyash Baiseitova was opened. The new cinema complex named “Cinema-City” was also opened in 2000. It was built in accordance with the best traditions of international cinemas and it has become one of the favorite places to visit for the people of Astana.
The “Baiterek Tower” has become the city’s symbol and its visiting card. The height of the construction is 105 meters. At the mark of 97 meters there is an observation desk providing a bird’s eye view of the city. The figure 97 was not chosen at random. It symbolizes the year of moving the capital from Almaty to Astana. The “Baiterek Tower” accommodates a large aquarium and a restaurant.
Astana is turning into one of the main business centers. All governmental organizations, diplomatic missions of 44 countries and 113 joint ventures are located there. Every year the city hosts various international industrial exhibitions, conferences, musical contests and festivals.
In 1999 by the decision of UNESCO Astana was awarded the title of “World City”
