Set Work
I. Master the pronunciation of the words below. Learn them and translate into Russian.
Posse, travesty, flaw, blatant, miscarriage, cowed, divisive, debacle.
II. Explain what is meant by:
to deliberate, to set out, to be subverted, well-worn evidence, to be held in high regard, racially charged trials, a divisive case, to sport, to vet, to put sb in jeopardy for sth.
III. Find in the article the English for:
IV. Interpret the lines below.
That trial, however, may have added a deeper and subtler level a damage.
The trial had been moved there from a city, it appeared, specifically to tap their law-abiding sympathies.
The infamous videotape, when seen in full, was every bit as ambiguous as the first jury had said.
The second trial did indeed, in the words of the Bill of Rights, put the officers “in jeopardy of life and limb” twice for the same offence.
The second trial ended up, like the first, obsessed with the simple scale of the beating.
The set-up was “more representative of Los Angeles”; it was “fairer.”
The King debacle, with all its other painful baggage, should remind Americans that meeting expectations is not what juries are for; nor, necessarily, what justice is about.
V. Points for discussion.
What does the author mean when he says that “justice is not what people think it should be. It is what a jury decides. There is a difference”?
What was the outcome of the second trial?
Why has the principal of a fair trial taken a beating?
What do you think of Rodney King’s case? Is he or are the police officers to blame?
Why do cases of the kind put uncommon pressure on a jury?
VI. Sum up the article and single out its main points.
