Whitehall is the site of principal former and present government offices. 4. The residence of the British Prime Minister is located in Downing Street at number 10. 5. Almost all English kings and queens since William I have been crowned in the Westminster Abbey. 6. The Tate Gallery specializes in British painting from the late 16th century to the present day. 7. Buckingham Palace was built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham. 8. The Royal Standard is flown at the flagstaff when the Queen is in the residence. 9. The Hyde Park occupies about 350 acres. 10. Knightsbridge and Oxford Street are the streets famous for their expensive fashionable shops. 11. Harrods, the best and the most expensive department store in the United Kingdom, and the largest in Europe. 12. Most of the important newspaper offices used to be in Fleet Street. 13. Paddington, Charing Cross, Victoria, Waterloo, Liverpool Street are the main railway stations in different parts of London. 14. The Tower of London is a museum and the place where the crown jewels are kept. 15. Tower Bridge is a movable bridge across the river Thames in London. 16. The British Museum has many priceless collections of sculptures, drawings, coins and medals. 17. Kew Gardens contains plants from all over the world. 18. Scotland Yard is the name of the police headquarters and the police itself. 19. Heathrow is an important international airport to the west of London.

1. If you stand in Trafalgar Square with your back to Nelson's Column, you will see a wide horizontal front in a classical style. 2. It is the National Gallery. 3. It has been in this building since 1838. 4. It was built as the National Gallery to house the collection of Old Masters Paintings (38 paintings) offered to the nation by an English private collector, Sir George Beamount. 5. Today the picture galleries of the National Gallery of Art exhibit works of all the European schools of painting which existed between the 13th and 19th centuries. 6. In 1897 the Tate Gallery was opened to house the more modern British paintings. 7. Most of the National Gallery collection of British paintings was transferred to the Tate. 8. Thus, the Tate Gallery exhibits a number of interesting collections of British and foreign modern painting and also modern sculpture.
