The Faculty of Law at Present (Lviv University)

Nowadays the faculty of law which is known to be one of the oldest Law Schools both in Ukraine and in Europe, trains highly-qualified lawyers who work in the bodies of state administration, in the state security bodies, in the bodies of local self-government, in the bodies of judicature and prosecution and also of justice, in the law-enforcing bodies; they successfully work in the Bar and in notary's offices, in the Supreme Court, in the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, in the Ministry of Justice, in the High Council of Justice of Ukraine and at the Customs.

At present the teaching staff amounts to 65 persons, among them 11 Full Professors, Doctors of Law, 34 Associate Professors, Masters of Law, 20teachers and probationer teachers. The student population comprises more than 2,000 persons who take courses at full-time and extra-mural departments.

The faculty staff is engaged in academic, research and educational activities at 7 departments (chairs):

1) the department of theory and history of the state and law;

2)the department of constitutional, administrative and financial;

3) the department of civil law and procedure;

4) the department of labour, agrarian and ecological law;

5) the department of criminal law and criminology (criminal science);

6) the department of criminal procedure and criminalistics ;

7)the department of the fundamentals of Ukraine's law.

The law students take the following basic (fundamental) teachings (teaching courses):

  • Theory of law and the state;

  • History of the state and law of Ukraine;

  • History of the state and law of foreign countries;

  • History of political and law teachings;

* History of political and legal thought of Ukraine;

* Constitutional law of Ukraine;

* Constitutional law of foreign countries;

* State procedural law of Ukraine;

* Civil law of Ukraine;

* Civil procedure of Ukraine (law of civil procedure);

* Matrimonial (Family) law of Ukraine;

* Finance (financial) law of Ukraine;

  • Public International law;

  • * Private International law;

  • Labour (relations) law of Ukraine;

  • Economic law of Ukraine;

  • Agrarian law of Ukraine;

  • Ecological law of Ukraine;

  • Corporate law of Ukraine;

  • Judicial and law-enforcing bodies;

  • Criminal law of Ukraine;

  • Criminal procedure (law of criminal procedure) of Ukraine;

  • Criminalistics;

  • Criminology (Criminal science);

  • Forensic medicine (Medical jurisprudence);

  • Forensic (legal) psychiatry;

  • Procurator's supervision;

  • Philosophy;

  • Foreign languages;

  • Logic;

* Economic theory;

* Political Science

In the structural subdivision of the faculty there is a criminalistics laboratory with film- and photolabs; study rooms: of investigatory tactics, of methods of particular crimes investigation (inquiry), of tracing science (слідознавства), of document processing (оформлення документів), a codification bureau, a small publishing centre, a law library and computer classes.

Forth-year and fifth-year students are trained in 5 specialities: "State law, administration and political science"; "Civil law"; "Customs business (science)"; "Court legal proceedings, public prosecution, advocacy"; "Investigation and Criminalistics". Each year the law students write and defend their course (term) papers; those with perfect knowledge of English write and defend their course and diploma papers in the English language.
