In memory of1 trooper2 jose m. Cavazos

Trooper Jose M. Cavazos, 50, died Feb. 24, 1993, of gunshot wounds3 suffered when he stopped two men in a car. He became the 45th member of the Department to die in the line of duty4.

Born Dec. 25, 1942, Trooper Cavazos was a native of Edinburg, Texas, and a 1961 graduate of Edinburg High School. He attended Pan American University, MacAllen, Texas.

He began his career in April 1969 with the Department of Vehicles5. In 1983 he entered the Academy Basic School and, at the age of 42, was one of the oldest cadets to graduate from the Academy.

He was promoted6 to Trooper II July 1, 1987, and had received seven commendations7 as a trooper.

Two suspects were apprehended8 after a Prince William County Police canine team9 tracked a scent10 from Volkswagen jetta the pair abandoned about 100 yards from the shooting scene. Witnesses had led police to the car. The car had been reported stolen in North Carolina four days earlier.

Sgt.11 Norman Pirkey told reporters that it is believed that Trooper Cavazos was shot after a scuffle12 with the men outside the car and that Cavazos never removed his weapon from the holster13. He was found facedown on the exit ramp and his cruiser’s engine was still running.

  1. Sir robert peel (1788 –1850)

Sir Robert Peel is one of the most important British politicians of the early 19th century. He was a British Prime Minister and the founder of the

Conservative party. But he is best known for1 his part in founding the London police force in 1829. British policemen are still called ‘bobbies’ after him (from Bobby, the short form of Robert).

Peel was born at Bary in Lancashire, the son of a wealthy cotton

manufacturer. He was sent to Harrow School2 and Oxford University, where he was brilliant at both classics (Latin and Greek) and mathematics. In 1809 he became a member of parliament, and it was soon seen that he was both able and hard working.

Peel had great success as Home Secretary3 in the Tory4 Government. He reformed the criminal law by reducing the number of crimes for which people could be hanged5, by improving the prisons. Rising crime statistics convinced him that legal reform should be accompanied by improved methods of crime prevention.

Peel had established the first successful constabularies6 in Ireland (during his secretaryship7 there) and London (as home secretary in 1828). In 1829 he carried through the Metropolitan Police Act8, which set up the first disciplined police force for London area. As a result of Peel’s efforts, the London police force became known as Bobby’s boys and later simply bobbies.
