Exercise 19

Translate the following sentences from English into Russian. Mind the use of There + be.

  1. There was complete silence in the room.

  2. There’s somebody at the door. Can you go and see who it is?

  3. There is sure to be a flight to Paris this evening.

  4. There used to be a cinema in Main Street but it closed a few years ago. That building now is a supermarket. It used to be a cinema.

  5. There was hardly anybody on the beach. It was almost deserted.

  6. Things are much more expensive now. There has been a big rise in the cost of living.

  7. When we arrived at the party, there were already a lot of people there.

  8. I don’t like this town. There’s nothing to do here. It’s a boring place.

  9. Will there be many people at the stadium?

10. If people drove more carefully, there wouldn’t be so many accidents.

11. There is some Coca-Cola in that glass.

Exercise 20

Translate the following sentences from Russian into English. Mind the use of There + be, it or they.

The sequence of tenses Reporting in the Present Tense

Exercise 1

When the reporting is in the present tense (says, mention), then the tense of the verb in direct speech (’m having, like, ’ll be) doesn’t change.

Example:

  • “I’m having a great time in New York”. Simon says he’s having a great time in New York.

  • “We’ll be home next Tuesday”. He says they’ll be home next Tuesday.

Turn these sentences from Direct into Reported (Indirect) speech.

  1. “I’ve finished my work”, she says.

  2. “Why are you looking at me like that?” she asks him.

  3. “Don’t play with matches”, parents tell their kids.

  4. “Will you be home soon?” she asks her husband.

  5. “I’ll clean the car tomorrow”, Tim promises.

  6. “I can do it tomorrow”, he remarks.

  7. “You must be back at 10.00”, the father says to his daughter.

  8. “They should try harder”, the experts recommended.

  9. “My brother has been working for the same company for 5 years”, she adds.

  10. “May I cal you by your first name?” he asks her.

Exercise 2

Kidnapped!

Someone has kidnapped the son of the industrialist James Thornton. The Thortnons have just received this note from the kidnappers.

What does the note say? Finish telling what the note says.

  • The note says they have kidnapped the Thorntons’ son. It says …

Amanda is doing a survey for the newspaper. She’s asking pupils what they thing about sports at school.

Reporting in the Past Tense

Exercise 4

A: After the reporting verb in the past tense (e.g. said, told) the verb in the direct speech usually changes from the present to the past.

Example:

  • Jim met Ann while she was on holiday.

Read Ann’s words then report what she said.

Example:

  • The weather is hot.

  • Ann said the weather was hot.

  1. The food is delicious.

  2. I go swimming every day.

  3. I hate going back to work.

  4. I’m learning Spanish.

  5. I’ve got a lovely sun tan.

  6. I’m coming back again next year.

  7. I’ve made a lot of friends.
