Reported (Indirect) Offers, Suggestion and Advice Exercise 24

To report speaker’s words containing offers, suggestions or advice we use the following introductory verbs:

1. offer + to infinitive

2. suggest that somebody should + V

suggest that somebody + Verb/Verb2

suggest + Ving (Gerund)

3. advise + to infinitive

Introductory Verb

Example

offer + to infinitive

  • “Would you like me to drive you home?”

  • He offered to drive me home.

suggest that … should + V

suggest that … + Verb/Verb2

suggest + Ving (Gerund)

  • “Let’s order a pizza”.

  • He suggested that we should order a pizza.

  • He suggested that we order/ordered a pizza.

  • He suggested ordering a pizza.

advise smb + to infinitive

  • “You should talk about your problem”.

  • He advised me to talk about my problem.

First write (choose) an appropriate introductory verb, than report the following situations.

Reported (Indirect) Exclamations Exercise 25

Turn the following into Reported Speech. Use the verbs given below.

explain thank wish say remark cry out in pain

give an exclamation of surprise/ horror/ disgust / delight etc.

Example:

  • “It’s a tragedy!”

  • He exclaimed that it was a tragedy.

  1. “Wonderful!” he said, when the bank manager agreed to lend him the money.

  2. “Ouch!” he said, as the nurse gave him the injection.

  3. “Wow!” he said, when he first saw the Pyramids.

  4. “Ugh!” she said, as stepped into the muddy puddle.

  5. “What a sunny day it is!”

  6. “How rude he is!” she said to me.

  7. “What a nice gift!” he said.

  8. “She is such a turkey!” (a foolish person; someone who does silly, absentminded things).

  9. “Oh! The coffee is too hot!”

  10. “You are as slow as a turtle!”

Exercise 26

Match exclamatory sentences in Direct Speech with their counterparts in Reported speech.
