Mike: No, I was just on time . I arrived at 8 sharp. Where are you going?

Mary: I have an appointment with my teacher of mathematics. He is revising my report.

Mike: And what about the evening ? Have you any plans?

Mary: Nothing in particular, but at 6 p. m. I go to the tennis court.

Mike: Oh, Mary! You play tennis! Are you good at tennis?

Mary: Unfortunately not so good yet. But I’m fond of it. Twice a week I take training and my coach says me that very soon I’ll be really good at tennis.

Mike: I hope so. I’d love to go with you and play just a bit , but next week we’ll write the test on chemistry. You see, Mary, it is my week point and I have to catch up on it.

Mary: Oh, Mike , don’t worry! You can always rely on my help.

What is hobby? It is what you can and like to do when you have free time . We chose a hobby according to our character and taste. When we have a hobby our life becomes more interesting.

Very often our hobby helps us to chose our future profession. Hobbies are divided into four large classes: doing things, making things, collecting things, and learning things.

The most popular of all hobby groups is doing things. It includes a wide variety of activities, everything from gardening to travelling and from chess to volleyball. Gardening is one of the oldest of man’s hobbies. It’s well known that the English are very fond of gardening and growing flowers, especially roses. Both grown-ups and children spend the whole days round in playing computer games, relatively new hobby which is becoming more and more popular.

Making things includes drawing, painting, making sculpture, designing costumes, handicrafts. Two of the most famous hobby painters were President Eisenhower and Sir Winston Churchill. Some hobbyists write music or play musical instruments.

Almost everyone collects something at some period in his life: stamps, coins, match-boxes, books, records, postcards, toys, watches. People with a good deal of money often collect paintings, rare books and other art objects. No matter what kind of hobby a person has, he always has the opportunity of learning from it.
