Гласные
Для классификации гласных рассматриваются различные положения языка относительно твёрдого нёба, а также, какая часть языка участвует в артикуляции и как высоко спинка языка поднимается к твёрдому нёбу.
Различают гласные переднего ряда, когда кончик языка упирается в основание нижних зубов, а спинка языка довольно близко подходит к твёрдому нёбу: английский гласный [i:] и русский [и].
Если язык оттянут назад и кончик языка опущен, а спинка языка приподнята к мягкому нёбу, мы произносим гласные заднего ряда: английский звук [a:] и русские звуки [о] и [у].
По положению губ различают огубленные и неогубленные гласные. Например, при произнесении русского звука [у] губы округляются и выдвигаются вперёд: [у] является огубленным гласным. При произнесении [и] губы чуть растянуты, но не выдвинуты вперёд: гласный [и] - неогубленный гласный.
Качество гласного зависит от напряжённости мускулатуры органов речи: чем напряжённее артикуляция, тем отчётливее и ярче звук. Соответственно различают гласные напряжённые и ненапряжённые. Например, английский гласный [i:] произносится с большим напряжением, чем [i].
* Данная классификация не претендует на полноту изложения; мы берём только тот материал, который поможет в объяснении артикуляции звуков.
§ 3. Особенности английского произношения
Органы речи устроены у всех народов одинаково. Однако в каждом языке есть свои особенности в звуковом строе, свои способы произношения звуков и фраз. Каждый язык характеризуется определённым укладом органов речи и имеет свои особенности в интонации предложения.
В отличие от русского языка звонкие согласные в английском языке в конце слов и перед глухими согласными не оглушаются. Звонкость - глухость в английском языке являются смыслоразличительной чертой, т.е. отличает одно слово от другого:
bad (плохой) - bat (летучая мышь)
Глухие согласные в конце слов произносятся очень энергично. Звонкие же согласные произносятся менее энергично, особенно в конце слов. В русском языке звонкие согласные в конце слов и перед глухой согласной оглушаются: дуб, сев.
Большинство английских смычных и смычно-щелевых согласных [t, d, n, l, s, z, tʃ, dʒ] образуются при соприкосновении кончика языка с альвеолами. Большинство русских переднеязычных согласных [т, д, н, л] - зубные. Например:
[ tin ] tin – тень
[ dei ] day – день
[ leit ] late – лет
[ neim ] name - нет
Английский язык чётко различает напряжённую и протяжную артикуляцию одних гласных звуков и ненапряжённое и краткое произнесение других. Например:
[ nit - ni:t ]
[ luk - lu:z ]
[ kΛm - ka:m ]
В русском языке противопоставления слов по долготе и краткости нет. В английском языке есть долгие звуки, которые произносятся напряжённо и протяжно, в то время как краткие гласные - ненапряжённо и кратко:
[ u - u: ]
[ i: - i ]
Долгота в транскрипции обозначается двумя вертикальными точками после гласной. Долгота - краткость отличают одно слово от другого. Например:
[ ful ] полный - [ fu:l ] дурак
[ liv ] жить - [ li:v ] покидать
[ kΛt ] резать - [ ka:t ] телега
В русском языке долгота - краткость не несёт смыслоразличительной нагрузки. Звуки противопоставляются по твёрдости - мягкости:
угол – уголь
ел – ель
нос - нёс
и по глухости - звонкости:
путь – будь
том – дом
собор - забор
В английском языке согласные не смягчаются.
В английском языке существуют дифтонги (ди - два, фтонг - звук), которые являются неделимыми звуками. Первая часть дифтонга "ядро" произносится довольно чётко, вторая часть представляет собой скольжение в направлении звуков [i] или [ə]. Кроме того, имеются гласные звуки, состоящие из трёх элементов: [ aiə ], [ auə ]. В русском языке дифтонгов нет. Сочетания звуков "ой, эй, ай" дифтонгами не являются.
Большинство английских гласных звуков произносится с плоским укладом губ, т.е. углы губ слегка оттянуты в стороны, а губы не округляются и не выпячиваются. Например:

И, наконец, в английском языке существуют звуки, которых в русском языке нет:
межзубные звуки [ð, θ]. Например:
[ θik ] thick - густой
[ θin ] thin - тонкий
[ ðei ] they - они
[ ðis ] this - это
губно-губной звук [w]. Например:
[ weit ] wait - ждать
[ wi: ] we - мы
[ wai ] why - почему
носовой звук [ŋ] Например:
[ siŋ ] sing - петь
[ soŋ ] song - песня
[ raitiŋ ] writing - пишущий
звук [r] Например:
[ rait ] write - писать
[ rout ] wrote - написал
[ `rivə ] river - река
звук [ə:], при котором используется уклад языка не характерный для русского языка. Например:
[ ə:li ] early - рано
[ gə:l ] girl - девочка
[ tə:n ] turn - поворот
В английском языке артикуляция, т.е. произнесение гласных почти не поддаётся влиянию согласных. Гласный звук является ведущим в артикуляции. В связи с этим рекомендуется при постановке английского произношения сочетать с гласным звуком как можно больше различных согласных звуков. Мы придерживаемся этого принципа в фонетических упражнениях, данных ниже. В русском языке артикуляция гласных в большой степени зависит от твёрдости или мягкости соседних согласных: вол - вёл; нос - нёс.
