§1. Словообразование
По своей структуре слова в английском языке делятся на простые, производные и составные.
Простые слова. К простым словам относятся слова, не имеющие в своем составе ни префиксов, ни суффиксов: chair, red, one, to speak
Простые слова могут образовываться от других простых слов следующими способами:
Без всякого изменения произношения и написания слова – этот способ образования слов, который называется в грамматике конверсией, очень распространен в современном английском языке. Вопрос о том, какой частью речи является такое слово, разрешается на основании его формальных и синтаксических признаков. Такое совпадение по форме особенно часто встречается у существительных и глаголов:
answer - to answer
change – to change
order – to order
work – to work
Совпадение форм встречается также у прилагательных и глаголов.
clean – to clean
empty – to empty
free – to free
В некоторых случаях совпадения форм встречается у нескольких частей речи. Так, например, слово light может быть существительным со значением свет, прилагательным – светлый и глаголом – зажигать, освещать.
Путем изменения ударения (без изменения написания слова), причем существительные имеют ударение на первом слоге, а соответствующие им глаголы – на втором:
´increase – to in´crease
´export – to ex´port
´import – to im´port
´contract – to con´tract
´record – to re´cord
Путем чередования последнего звука, который является глухим в существительных и звонким в соответствующих им глаголах. При этом в ряде случаев чередование последнего звука сопровождается чередованием корневого гласного звука и изменением написания слова.:
use – to use
advice – to advise
life – to live
choice – to choose
loss – to lose
Производные слова. К производным словам относятся слова, в состав которых входят префиксы или суффиксы или одновременно и те и другие.
Префикс стоит в начале слова и изменяет значение слова на противоположное, но, как правило, не меняет его принадлежности к той или иной части речи:
un- (встречается чаще всего) easy – uneasy
im- (перед словом, которое начинается на m или p) moral – immoral; possible – impossible
il- (перед словами, начинающимися на l) legal – illegal
ir- (перед словами, начинающимися на r) relevant – irrelevant
dis- honest – dishonest; like – dislike; agree – disagree
in- (редко) visible – invisible; tolerance - intolerance
Суффиксы стоят в конце слова и в большинстве случаев служат для образования одной части речи от другой. Таким образом суффикс показывает, к какой части речи относится данное слово:
Многие существительные образуются от глаголов путем добавления суффиксов. Наиболее часто употребляемые суффиксы: -ment, -ion, -ation, -ing. Например: to improve – improvement to elect – election
to discuss – discussion to inform – information
to organize –organization to travel - travelling
При помощи суффиксов-ness, -ity можно образовать существительное от прилагательного:
happy – happiness weak – weakness
similar – similarity probable - probability
Присоединение этих суффиксов иногда способствует изменению ударения во вновь образованных словах. В существительных, которые оканчиваются на -ity, основное ударение падает на предпоследний слог, и таким образом, произношение глагола, имени прилагательного или имени существительного может отличаться друг от друга.
to educate – education punctual - punctuality
to organize – organization similar – similarity
to inform – information stupid - stupidity
Другие часто употребляемые суффиксы –er, -or, -ist. Они присоединяются к именам существительным или глаголам, чтобы образовать названия разных профессий или назвать того, кто выполняет данное действие:
to drive – driver
to translate – translator
art – artist
psychology - psychologist
При помощи суффиксов –ous, -al, -y, -ive можно образовать прилагательное от глагола или существительного:
danger – dangerous sun - sunny
politics – political to create - creative
Суффиксы –able, -ible употребляются при образовании многих имен прилагательных. Часто эти суффиксы придают прилагательным следующее значение – «что-либо можно с этим делать», например:
to wash – washable to drink - drinkable
Если к этим прилагательным присоединить префиксы un- или in-, то получим слова противоположного значения, например:
unbreakable - небьющийся
uncomfortable - неудобный
Суффикс -ful часто обозначает, что что-либо преисполнено/проникнуто чем-либо, например:
helpful – готовый помочь
careful – осторожный
Суффикс –less обозначает недостаток чего-либо, например:
jobless (безработный), homeless (бездомный), careless (небрежный)
Часто слова с суффиксами –ful и -less являются антонимами.
Составные слова. К составным словам относятся слова, образованные путем соединения двух слов в одно. Некоторые слова пишутся слитно, другие – через дефис. В английском языке существуют составные существительные, прилагательные, местоимения, глаголы, наречия, предлоги.
Составные существительные:
bedroom (bed+room)
newspaper (news+paper)
blackboard (black+board)
Составные прилагательные:
dark-blue (dark+blue)
first-class (first+class)
Следует выделить составные прилагательные, образованные из сочетания прилагательного и существительного с суффиксом:
blue-eyed
kind-hearted
